Wow! I sure can appreciate this Vintage Art Deco Scoring Punch on a number of levels. This is an extraordinary example of streamlined modernist design whose designer is amazingly still unidentified. This particular model looks just like an old streamliner train from the 30’s. Examples can be found in the museum collections of the Yale University Art Gallery and the Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum.

So what is it? It is a tool used to create holes in punch cards for data processing. It was used with IBM 805 Test Scoring Machines. Punched cards were an early form of digital data storage. The cards were widely used for entering data into computers throughout much of the 20th century. The IBM punch cards that this tool punched were culturally significant and symbolized 20th-century automation.

If you collect office ephemera or Art Deco streamlined pieces, this piece would display very appropriately with these collectibles.
