Parisian Paul Gavarni (1804-1866) was among the most popular French illustrators of the early 19th Century, famed for his caricatures of the various social classes of Paris. In this original whimsical undated magazine illustration (probably from Le Charivari), he depicts two Lorettes, the term for prostitutes who frequented the neighborhood surrounding the Church of Notre Dame de Lorette during the Second French Empire (1852-1870). In this sketch entitled "Aged Lorettes," the caption reads: "Let's Go! To the Market ma'am and don't carrot me!" (That likely has a connotation that escapes me. Experts please tell me if you know!)
This fine antique illustration would be charming once matted and framed! The print area is 5" x 7". I will ship flat in an acid free plastic sleeve, sandwiched in board in a sturdy protective mailer. Smoke free home. See all photos carefully to judge condition.
