Sojourner Truth was born into slavery in New York and became a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement and the fight for women's suffrage. She delivered her famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman” at a Women's Rights Convention in 1851.
Only 50 of these 13" porcelain "Sojourner Truth" dolls were made in 1986 by original artist Sharon Napier and were made especially for the UFDC Region 12 Conference, sponsored by the Battle Creek Area Doll Club. Truth spent her last years of life residing in Battle Creek,MI.
The doll is in perfect condition, crafted with black Persian lamb wig, set in plastic eyes, bisque head, shoulder plate, arms and painted brown boots attached to a cloth jointed body. She is wearing a slip, pantaloons, skirt, vest-blouse, neck scarf, head scarf, shawl, purse, support stand, Bible and glasses. It is in the original box notated with the UFDC Region 12 Conference information.
This magnificent doll is perfect for a private collection or can be used as teach tool.
